Wait… I Don’t Remember Attacking Russia? Did I Sleep-Walk into World War III?
You know, I must have been sleepwalking back in 2022 because apparently, I—along with the rest of Ukraine—attacked Russia. Who knew? Not me. Not the millions of other people in the country sent running for their lives as Russian missiles lit up the sky over Kyiv at 4 a.m. on February 24. But, according to the new US ‘King’ himself, President Donald Trump, Ukraine started this whole war. That’s right. The country that was bombed, invaded, and occupied by Russian forces apparently picked a fight with the world’s second-largest nuclear military power. Makes total sense....
Yet here we are, three years later, with the Trump administration rewriting history like a discount George Orwell in MAGA red. Unlike the current US administration, I was actually in Kyiv when Russia launched its full-scale invasion. I remember the freezing temperatures, the missiles raining down, and the sheer terror of millions of us trying to escape. The streets were filled with people running for cover, desperate to reach safety, while air raid sirens howled through the city. It wasn’t a "skirmish," or "Special Military Operation". No, no, no. It was an outright attack by Russia—on land, in space, at sea, through cyber warfare, and in the air.
MAGA Diplomacy™: How to Lose Allies and Look Aligned to the Kremlin in One Easy Step
In case you missed it, President Trump recently and briefly claimed that Ukraine "attacked Russia" in 2022, sadly regurgitating Kremlin propaganda ever since. Sure, he backtracked a bit—because even his own advisors probably had to smack him with undeniable reality—but the damage was already done.
Additionally, the Trump administration and Vice President Vance have been strong-arming a key NATO ally Romania into reinstating a pro-Russian candidate, hero of Russia, Calin Georgescu—yes, the same Presidential candidate previously suspected of election fraud and other crimes. (Georgescu was arrested while I was writing this article, with 10 million in cash and a one-way ticket to Moscow) Trump is pressuring for him to be put back on the ballot, but it hasn't happened yet. Furthermore, they have pushed for the Tate brothers, currently standing trial for rape and human trafficking, to have their travel ban lifted.
“This is the first time in modern history that a U.S. president criticized an ally for not surrendering to an invading force.” Neville Chamberlain must be looking up from wherever he is, shaking his head, thinking, Damn, I wasn’t even that bad giving away then Czechoslovakia to the NAZIs as an appeasement pre Second World War. That totally didn't help lead to another world war right...right?
Even Jonathan Pie Couldn’t Make This Up…
The British political satirist recently ranted in one of his trademark monologues:
"Trump claiming that Ukraine started the war is like Roosevelt saying, ‘Well, what the [ __ ] were those ships doing in Pearl Harbor in the first place?’ The art of the deal, eh? The great negotiator showed his hand after two seconds, showed the world that he'd been entirely captured by Kremlin talking points instead of at least pretending to be neutral."
Pie’s sarcasm stings because it feels depressingly true. Instead of negotiating from a position of strength, Trump seemed to roll over faster than a puppy asking for belly rubs from Putin.
Meanwhile, in the Real World…
Spoiler alert:
You see, I was one of those refugees who shook awake in Kyiv that fateful night to Russia attacking us, not the other way around. I'm a United States Air Force veteran, former combat aviator and Space Command. Yet, according to this wonderful, new timeline Trump is crafting, I was actually part of some grand offensive against Russia. Right. Because clearly, my main priority at that moment was plotting a military offensive against Moscow whilst trying to keep warm in a days long border queue, dodging PMC Wagner, Russian military shelling, just hoping to survive another moment. Whilst witnessing some around me.....May St. Olga, the Ukrainian patron saint of vengeance—who once burned entire cities to the ground—watch over their souls.
I remember 2022 Ukraine, shock, terror, breaking my ankle and tibia, and, witnessing war crimes. Unlike Shaggy, it actually wasn't me, definitely didn't load up a surface-to-air missile against Russian troops aimed over their border. We loaded strangers into our ragtag vehicle caravan off the streets, as nearby airports were destroyed, a column of tanks bared down on us and Russian paratroopers dotted the horizon.
Then came the border chaos. I arrived at the Siret crossing into Romania, witnessing firsthand, reporting to the Washington Post and Vulture Beat how Russian cyberattacks crippled the Ukrainian State Border Guard systems. Refugees—women, children, students, and the elderly—were trapped in endless lines, identification data erased by a Russian wiper virus, delaying their passage for hours, even days.
I wasn't driving a tank across the Belarus border, like the Russian military. Instead I was helping thousands evacuate occupied Ukraine with many others. We got out, a famous basketball player, Ukrainians, and students from the Global South. With aid agencies, NGOs, volunteers, civilians who were fighting non-stop nation-state electronic and cyberwarfare attacks, not fighting against Russia.
I definitely would've remembered rallying an army to blitz Moscow, instead of desperately negotiating with newly installed warlords—otherwise known as Russian mayors in occupied Ukraine—while trying to get even the most basic supplies to the most desperate instead. Or goodness forbid, trying to help negotiate humanitarian corridors, it was definitely Russian troops that shot at students, causing safe passage to fail and become suspiciously mistrusted. None of us took up arms against innocent Russian civilians, destroying their hopes and dreams due to Soviet Union nostalgia. The children of Mariupol did not bomb themselves President Trump. Let’s get back to reality please, billions depend on you.
The Real Endgame: A New US-Russia Axis?
Let’s be real. Trusting Russia to shape U.S. policy is like hiring a fox to babysit your chickens—sure, it might be an 'unconventional' approach, but don’t act surprised when all you’re left with is feathers and regrets.
What’s happening here isn’t diplomacy—it’s an audition for Russia’s next satellite state. This isn’t about peace. It’s about Trump’s fragile ego getting bruised by world leaders whilst providing additional circumstantial evidence of being a Russian asset. And now, because of potential confusion over an oath to the Constitution of the Russian Federation vs. the US Constitution, he’s decided that dismantling Western alliances is a small price to pay for a little revenge.
Trump, his sycophants, Muskrats and their billionaire backers are laying the groundwork for an America that kisses up to dictators and bullies best friends, whilst feeding into a cult like tech-dystopian future. And for what? So Trump and Putin can play a little golf together? Or maybe he is haunted by the woman who originally built Mar-a-Lago?
If you’re still under the illusion that Trump gives a damn about Ukraine, democracy, or even basic human decency, let me remind you: he couldn’t even keep his facts straight about who started the war. This isn’t strategy—it’s desperation. Russia is so lacking in funds at this moment, they can no longer afford vehicles to transport supplies to the front, instead opting for donkeys. Why else do you think the Russian state threw so many funds into election interference and other influence operations in 2024?
So, what now?
Maybe, just maybe, this is the moment when the last remaining allies of the U.S. realize that Trump is an ally of no one—not Ukraine, not NATO, and certainly not the American people. Maybe this is when the world finally stops treating him like a serious statesman and starts seeing him for what he is: an unhinged, Kremlin-parroting reality TV has-been who has no business anywhere near global diplomacy. Much less attempting to influence close ally elections in all the wrong ways.
Or maybe, we’ll all wake up tomorrow and find out that Ukraine also invaded Poland and started the 1665 Great Fire of London. At this rate, nothing would surprise me.
If Trump had a history textbook, I’d suggest he read it. But let’s be honest—he’d probably just burn it. Until then, I’ll keep checking my passport to see if I somehow missed my brief stint as an invading general against Russia. Because, apparently, history is whatever Trump and his minions decide it is today.
